H100 vs A100: Compare GPUs by Workload Cost
Compare NVIDIA H100 and A100 memory, hardware variants and rental economics. Use measured workload throughput to choose the lower cost per result.
Is H100 or A100 better value?
The better value is the configuration that completes your workload at the lower total cost while meeting quality and latency requirements. Compare the exact GPU variant, usable memory, plan size and measured performance. A newer chip does not automatically produce a cheaper bill.
Use H100 rental offers and A100 Spot offers to identify configurations, then benchmark your workload. Our current A100 comparison coverage comes from representative Azure Spot SKUs; it is not a like-for-like survey of the complete A100 on-demand market.
The hardware name is only the starting point
| Feature | H100 | A100 |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Hopper | Ampere |
| Memory examples | 80GB H100 SXM; 94GB per H100 NVL GPU | 40GB and 80GB variants |
| Configuration | Confirm SXM versus NVL, GPU count and topology | Confirm PCIe versus SXM, memory and topology |
| Buying decision | Measure speed, memory fit and whole-plan cost | Measure speed, memory fit and whole-plan cost |
NVIDIA’s H100 specifications and A100 technical comparison document memory variants. More memory can change whether a workload fits and how many GPUs it needs. Hardware peak specifications are not a guarantee of application throughput.
Calculate the rental break-even point
Cost per result = whole-plan hourly cost ÷ useful results per hour. Use matched workload, output quality and service settings. For a fixed training run, compare plan hourly cost multiplied by time to completion.
If an A100 plan costs $2 per hour and an H100 plan costs $4, the H100 needs more than twice the useful throughput to lower compute cost. At three times the throughput it uses two-thirds of the compute budget for the same work. At 1.5 times the throughput it costs one-third more.
This calculation assumes identical GPU counts and excludes extra fees. If memory or topology changes the number of required GPUs, compare complete plans using the whole-plan pricing method.
What to measure before choosing
- Training: time to the same quality target, memory fit, checkpoint overhead and scaling efficiency.
- Inference: useful tokens or requests per second at your latency target, context length, batch size and precision.
- Multi-GPU jobs: interconnect, topology and communication overhead, rather than adding advertised chip throughput.
- Operations: software compatibility, quota, region, storage and allocation reliability.
Benchmark a representative sample before a longer rental. Keep a record of the software version, GPU variant, data, settings and output quality so the result can be reproduced.
Common comparison questions
Do all H100 cloud machines have the same memory?
No. NVIDIA lists 80GB for H100 SXM and 94GB per GPU for H100 NVL. Provider plans can differ in GPU count and configuration; inspect the exact SKU.
Can I compare an Azure A100 Spot rate with an H100 standard listing?
You can compare the advertised costs, but the interruption terms differ. Label each pricing type and account for restart overhead. Read the Spot versus on-demand guide.
Which one should I choose for my model?
Start with the memory and software requirements, then measure cost per result on qualifying offers. There is no universal speed multiplier that applies to every model and configuration.
